J.G. Ballard's High-Rise is the disturbing matter-of-fact tale of a collapsing middle class society within an ultra-modern skyscraper. The character’s total acceptance of their brutal decline into a primal state adds an unsettling layer of darkness to this grim examination of civilisation’s inner beast.
‘Later, as he sat on his balcony eating the dog’ – even from the first line, Ballard has you hooked with a snapshot of things to come. This is Lord of the Flies retold with all the snarling violence of Fight Club. A superb read - but perhaps not one for the beach over summer!
